Indie Mart started back in 2005 in a yard in the Mission District in SF, CA. It was born out of a desire to showcase handmade, zines, makers, budding foodies and indie businesses just starting out. We grew over the years into a street festival. IN 2013, we retired Indie Mart with the founder moving to the East Coast. However we decided that with the Maker Movement, SF's increasing costs of doing business and design shows/ crafts fairs- we wanted to come back to offer affordable booths, work with local venues to give makers and small businesses the chance to vend at affordable rates, in more personal venues where you can interact more and feature neighborhood focused events time to time for a truly hyper local experience.
Our sister business, Workshop SF and Workshop PGH (Pittsburgh, PA), were born out of Indie Mart, seeing that folks just appreciate handmade. Also after hearing endless people say "I can make that cheaper or myself". But do they? Rarely. So we realized we wanted to open the countries first lo-fi, fun, co-ed DIY school. The purpose was simple- to show folks how to make stuff and to then support local makers, businesses and artists byt creating teaching jobs. With this we've hired over 50 teachers in 7 years, supporting dozens of businesses and seeing makers thrive and grow, often then becoming too successful to teach and rinser, repeat- opening continual new opportunities for creatives who want to quit their jobs. Which is just about our favorite thing we hear from our teachers- when they give the big I QUIT and pursue their business and dream.
We hope to use both the Indie Mart and Workshop to support vendors and give you cool products, experiences and get you inspired whether you buy it or make it.
